Visages of Time

Visages of Time
12 May – 25 June 2023

This exhibition explores the intricate relationship between memory, identity, and the passage of time through the portraiture of two acclaimed artists: Christian Boltanski and Hiroshi Sugimoto. Both artists, through distinct approaches and mediums, interrogate the nature of the human face and its capacity to evoke both individual stories and collective histories.

Christian Boltanski, known for his poignant installations and conceptual works, often utilizes found photographs and personal objects to create intimate portraits that speak to loss, absence, and the fragility of memory. His blurred, ghostly images of anonymous individuals challenge viewers to confront the emotional weight of the past and the ephemeral nature of human existence.

Hiroshi Sugimoto, a master of photography, delves into the historical and philosophical dimensions of portraiture. His meticulously crafted images of wax figures, historical figures, and even himself, blur the lines between reality and representation, prompting contemplation on the constructed nature of identity and the enduring power of the photographic image.

Visages of Time invites viewers to embark on a visual and emotional journey through these two distinct yet interconnected artistic visions. By juxtaposing Boltanski’s evocative fragments of personal histories with Sugimoto’s timeless explorations of identity and representation, the exhibition aims to spark a dialogue on the complex and multifaceted ways in which portraits can capture, distort, and ultimately transcend the boundaries of time.
