Sculpting the Invisible – A Dialogue with Space and Time
Sculpting the Invisible – A Dialogue with Space and Time
31 March – 30 April 2023
This exhibition invites you to delve into the captivating world of Giovanni Anselmo, a leading figure in Arte Povera, the Italian movement that emerged in the 1960s. Anselmo’s work transcends categorization, fostering a dialogue between the visible and invisible, the finite and infinite. Through sculptures, installations, and interventions, he challenges our perception of space and time, inviting us to contemplate the fundamental forces that shape our universe.
A Revelation on the Horizon
A transformative experience on the summit of Stromboli volcano in 1965 marked a turning point for Anselmo. Witnessing the sunrise cast its shadows across the vast expanse of the sky ignited a profound awareness of the universe’s immensity and humanity’s place within it. This experience became a recurring theme in his work, a constant reminder of the interconnectedness of all things.
The Poetry of Materials
Anselmo’s sculptures and installations are characterized by their simple elegance and a unique sensitivity to materiality. He utilizes everyday materials like stone, wood, metal, and organic elements, imbuing them with a quiet power and symbolic resonance. The subtle interactions between these materials and the surrounding space create evocative experiences that invite contemplation.
Anselmo’s work invites us to become active participants in the artistic experience. By engaging with his sculptures and installations, we are encouraged to slow down, heighten our senses, and consider the world around us in new ways. This exhibition is a journey of discovery, a chance to connect with the poetry of the physical world and contemplate our place within the vastness of existence.
