The exhibition concentrates on the period of the artist’s ‘written paintings’ made between 1955 and 1965. At the time Pierzgalski, like other artists in the West (Marc Tobey, Henri Michaux, Cy Twombly), worked within what became the tradition set between action painting and calligraphy. Strongly inspired by writing systems, Pierzegalski incorporated sparing use of lines and a tendency to clear the composition of ‘unnecessary elements’. As with Michaux and Tobey, philosophical considerations accompanying the formalist practice become very important for the artist. As he stated in one of the interviews: ‘I compared art with the nature of man – I said: Art and man have a similar nature, they consist of spirit and matter. The analogy, however, is not complete, because man has one soul and one body, while art has one soul, but many incarnations.’
